Wanna know how this site started? It's a long, long story...

LorinaIt all started in the Spring of 1999. I was getting back into swing of dating again after a long term relationship ended, but not having too much luck with "the bar scene." Don't get me wrong, I had lots of fun and met lots of people... I'm not a social recluse or a hideously ugly troll, just a normal girl who wasn't meeting anyone who had anything in common with me. My best friend Jen, who had recently moved to the West Coast, encouraged me to try internet personals. She had met some cool friends that way, and swore it wasn't as creepy as it the media would have you believe.

I gave it a shot.

Well, I did meet cool friends, like Jonn, Ralph and Kevin, but also got responses from some of the freakiest creeps this side of the Jerry Springer Show! I couldn't keep such gems to myself, so I forwarded them to Jen, my sister Cindy, and my new e-pals. We had a blast reading between the lines and making absurd comments on these people's emails. It wasn't all jokes and games. I met a few folks from the internet. While Jonn and I hit it off great as friends, there was just no romantic spark, so my quest continued...

Then in September, when I had all but given up hope and was running the ads more for amusement than romance, this fella named Fritz e-mailed me. He totally knocked my socks off. We had so much fun e-mailing each other we decided to meet. The rest, as they say, is history. We're now one of those cute mushy couples you see gazing starry-eyed at each other. We've been together since Fall 1999 and were married in November of 2001. I know... EWWWW! The last thing you were expecting is that I'd actually meet a cool guy and we'd fall for each other and live happily ever after, eh? Well, sometimes good things happen to bad people.

This was never intended to be a website. The ads I placed were real. I really was looking for that special someone. And I found him. But whenever I'd tell someone about the freaks who wrote me, and even the not-so-freaky guys who were just glaringly bad matches, they'd tell me, "You should write a book about this" or "You should start a website." Being a web developer, that was the route I took.

Since it's official launch in February of 2000, Way Too Personal has won many website awards, including Yahoo Picks of the Month and Yahoo Picks of the Year, a MacWorld Best of the Web award, and my all-time favorite, a MountainDew.com award.

And it hasn't all been just bitchy fun. The message boards for the site has spawned many long-lasting friendships, several relationships, and a couple weddings, not to mention the hundreds who got great advice from folks who've been there, done that. Not bad for something that was never supposed to be published, huh?
