Names Say A Lot
With all the free e-mail services
out there, there's no reason for anyone to use an address
that might not give the best first impression. Maybe it's
an "in-joke" with you and your friends, but no one
is going to write you back to find out if they find your addy
questionable.
Jen: Maybe you want to write
a piece on your site explaining why people shouldn't use email
handles that make the reader pause and go "Hmmm, do I
really want to write to him/her?"
Take for instance
"ChemicalxFreak"--maybe he's a really nice guy.
His ad response sounds quite nice, and although he appears
not have read my ad (that says I'm just looking for platonic
friends), he still sounds charming. But when I looked at his
email address, I thought hmmm, is this guy an Ecstacy freak???
And I didn't write back.
Might be good
to caution other about. Some handles should just not be given
out the first time you meet someone. Take my lesbian friend
"spicypud@____.com" Uck, I don't want to know how
spicy it is! Similarly, would you really respond to someone
writing to you from "hunglikeahorse@____.com" or
"sexoffender_41@_____.com"? Okay, well, maybe the
first one. ;) But you get what I'm driving at.
Lorina:
Why
should I write about it when YOU just did!? Heh-heh... Yep,
the *only* time I ever wrote to a guy with a 69 on the end
of his name, he wrote a great e-mail, and I wrote him asking
if his birthday happened to be June 9th (like mine!), because
otherwise, his address was just gross! His birthday WAS June
9th, and didn't really think about it when he used the address.
Maybe now he will.
